Whether you’re visiting Northumberland for the first time, are a seasoned traveller or taking a holiday close to home, our bespoke, three-day guide to Northumberland promises much to enjoy and discover.
Set in the small parish of Humshaugh, just outside of Hexham, our 100-acre Georgian landed estate is perfectly positioned to explore the miles of rolling hillside, breathtaking scenery and fascinating world history our region is famous for.
In this article, we speak to owner of Walwick Hall Hotel, Rachel Harrison, to help plan the ultimate three-night break in Northumberland.
“We are proud to live in such a beautiful corner of England. Most of our team have lived in the area their entire life and guests love to hear their vast local knowledge on everything from coastline to countryside, as well as the off-the-beaten-track-places.”
Day One
When a short staycation to the countryside simply won’t do, take advantage of our new Three Night Midweek Getaway offer and choose to upgrade to our chef’s luxurious Tasting Menu. With an irresistible offer like this, we are certain you will have plenty of time to check in, chill out and see what all the fuss is about at the award winning Hexham, Hadrian’s Wall and Northumberland coastline.
A drive along the Old Military Road towards our elegant country retreat sets the scene for a tranquil escape. Weaving through some of Northumberland’s most stunning scenery with Hadrian’s Wall and a carpeted landscape of a thousand shades of green to keep you company.
Upon arrival, our Front of House team will be waiting to greet you and welcome you to a world away from the norm. Take a moment to familiarise yourself with our beautiful 100-acre estate as you enjoy a complimentary welcome drink at the Bar before retiring into your bedroom.
“Just like our guests, each of our ten individual bedrooms has its own distinctive personality. The Hunter commands sweeping views over the picturesque Tyne Valley, as does The Bramble and The Sycamore.”
After choosing to enjoy Lunch in The Dining Room, why not enjoy a few hours exploring our surrounding area? Hexham – a town recently awarded the ‘Happiest Place to Live’ – with its beautiful Abbey, is just a short drive away, as is Corbridge, an idyllic market town that’s home to a unique collection of vintage-inspired bookshops and independent retailers.
“Meeting guests from all corners of the globe has opened my eyes to the pull of the attractions located on our doorstep. I have always adored the landscape, especially the quaint village towns which remain one of Northumberland’s best-kept secrets – I still often wonder why so few know about these such beautiful places.”
After enjoying the best of British food in The Dining Room, let your evening consist of a soak in your rolltop bath, sipping an after dinner drink by the open fire at the Bar or stargazing from the comfort and luxury of your bedroom, so you’re relaxed and ready for a day of adventure.
Day Two
With super king beds, luxurious linens, and exceptional attention to detail, you’re guaranteed to wake up in a world of luxury.
Make your way downstairs for an a la carte Breakfast included in your luxury hotel deal before hopping in the car, ready for another day of exploration.
Fondly recognised for its award-winning beaches, the Northumberland coastline is often high up on people’s North East bucket list.
“While hidden deep in the heart of rural Northumberland, our unique setting is close enough for guests to immerse themselves in the unequalled sense of freedom that the many miles of desolate beaches, towering dunes and rocky headlines offer”.
Make your days out exploring that extra bit indulgent with a Walwick Hall packed lunch. Our staff will be more than happy to prepare you an Afternoon Tea to go, or a Walwick Hall Tasting Board, featuring a selection of charcuterie meats and cheese, homemade bread, olives, local chutneys and more to take with you on your travels.
For those seeking something closer to our country retreat, discover Hareshaw Lynne, a picturesque walk concluding with a stunning waterfall located just 20 minutes from our estate before returning for one of England’s most loved traditions, which is, of course, Afternoon Tea.
“I love watching our guest’s faces light up after a day of exploring as they sit down to enjoy Laurèns’ famous Walwick Hall Afternoon Tea. And where better to enjoy it than seated in one of Northumberland’s best country house Hotels?”
Day Three
After a blissful night’s sleep and breakfast at our boutique hotel, enjoy a day exploring the history found on our doorstep.
First put on the map by the Romans in AD 122 and then on the big screen in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves in 1991, Hadrian’s Wall is widely recognised as one of the North East’s most iconic landmarks. Wander around the unusually well-preserved baths, steam room and officers’ quarters at our neighbouring Chesters Roman Fort or set the day aside to take on one of the more challenging routes along Hadrian’s Wall.
After a day of ancient discoveries, journey back to the hotel and make the most of our Northumberland Spa for the perfect end to an eventful day. Soak up the feeling of total relaxation in our luxurious jacuzzi and glass-walled pavilion pool overlooking the breathtaking Tyne Valley.
As evening falls, take to The Dining Room to enjoy a complimentary upgrade to our indulgent Tasting Menu. Course by course, we invite you to experience a selection of indulgent dishes, featuring a hand crafted Amuse-Bouche, a tantalisingly sharp Beef Tartare and fresh Skrei Norweigian cod dressed with chilli oil.
Round off your final evening by retiring to the Bar to raise one last glass to luxury before waking up to complete your culinary experience with an a la carte breakfast with us.
