With its fresh Spring mornings and lovely long evenings – not to mention two extra long weekends – it’s no wonder that May is the UK’s official National Walking Month. Whether you prefer leisurely strolls or challenging hikes, our surroundings have got a walk for everyone. Lace up your walking boots and venture out to the heart of Northumberland to experience one these 3 beautiful local walks.

Greenlee Lough

If enjoying views of glistening lakes in the Spring sunshine is your idea of heaven, take a mini adventure to Greenlee Lough. Just a short drive from Matfen Hall, Greenlee Lough is Northumberland’s largest natural lake and the perfect spot for a scenic walk this May. The wetlands surrounding the lough make up a rare mosaic of habitats, home to a rich variety of flora and fauna. Discover Greenlee Lough’s beauty on this lovely 3.5 mile walk: click here.

Sycamore Gap

Enjoy magnificent views of Hadrian’s Wall and the Roman Military Way with this picturesque walk to the world famous Sycamore Gap Tree. Set in the stunning local landscape of rolling hills and wide skies, the iconic tree positioned along Hadrian’s Wall is truly a sight to behold against bright Spring skies. This circular route takes you through some of the most famous parts of the wall, immersing you in the history as you return via the Roman Military Way: click here.

Haughton Castle

There are few more romantic settings than Haughton Castle. Starting at our Estate, this varied walk takes you through fields, roads, country lanes and the quaint village of Humshaugh to reach Haughton Castle, a beautiful Grade I listed building dating back to the 13th century. The Castle faces parkland on one side and a spectacular view across farmland with the North Tyne River below on another. Please note, this walk features several off-road sections which can be muddy so make sure you use appropriate footwear: click here.

With its beautiful countryside, vast lakes, rolling hills and breathtaking scenery, Northumberland is the perfect place to enjoy a Spring ramble this May. And with our welcoming Restaurant, Spa and Bar just around the corner, you won’t be short of ways to revitalise after a few hours spent exploring, either. Book your visit here.
